The Nature School

The Nature School became fully operational in 1992. It offers a wildlife education programme to students from urban and outlying schools. The School employs one schoolteacher who lectures on a different animal topic every term.

SheppardExamples of topics taught in the past include the following: jaguar, giant otter, harpy eagle, predators, turtles, snakes, manatees, bats, and the rain forest. Each class includes a nature film and a conservation message. Wildlife information is taught to groups of primary and high school children from two different schools every day ... and this amounts to about 1,000 school kids per month!

The Zoo Bus

Zoo bus, Photo courtesy of D. SheppardThe Zoo Bus makes it possible for schools to enjoy educational field trips to the Guyana Zoo. Children are transported to the zoo from as far away as 1.5 hours by road from Georgetown. For instance, school children are brought from Mahaica on the East Coast, Timehri on the East Bank, Meten-en-Zorg on the West Coast, and Patentia on the West Bank. Normally such a trip would not be affordable to many students coming from out-of-town schools but now they enjoy the experience whilst travelling to the Zoo in safety and comfort. The previous school bus had began to deteriorate last year after considerable service - records kept over a 6-year period from 1996 to 2001 indicate that the bus transported 2, 555 teachers and 49, 817 students – a heavy work schedule!! The new vehicle has only recently arrived at the Guyana Zoo thanks to financial donations from sponsors, and now allows us to reliably offer an enjoyable educational experience to kids.
