Education Volunteers

About three years ago, a very small group of young people were trained at the Guyana Zoo's Education Department to interact with zoo visitors in an educational fashion. We have come a long way since those modest beginnings!

These fun-loving animal enthusiasts first go through a rigorous 12-week training programme, meeting every Saturday at the Zoo for two-hour classes. Training includes topics in zoology, as well as teaching techniques and public speaking training.

In 2001 (UN International Year of the Volunteer), Zoo Volunteers achieved national recognition as an "Outstanding Volunteer Organisation" by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

visitors with informal cageside talks, zoo tours and formal presentations. In addition, education volunteers are involved with the 'policing' of would-be trouble-makers. If a volunteer spots someone engaged in feeding, teasing or tormenting of an animal, they encourage the person to stop what they are doing - with an educational message.

Education volunteers are easily recognized by their bright smiles, t-shirt uniforms and harpy eagle name tags. Recently the programme has established a physical space for themselves in the Guyana Zoo in the Education Volunteer Office. This space has been decorated by the volunteers themselves with wildlife murals adorning all available wall space.
